DC’s Typefighter Debuts Two New Tracks

A little over a week ago I saw Typefighter open for PUP in a mini tour that would scale the east coast. This would be the first time I ever saw them live. The band, which calls themselves a garage-pop band, serves a likely fan base of those that likely loved the Weakerthans Left and Leaving cross between—well fans of PUP. This is likely because lead singer/songwriter Ryan McLaughlin also leads punk outfit, Joy Buttons.

Recently Typefighter released two songs which can be found below. To celebrate the limited tape release, McLaughlin (who also owns area Food Truck/Brick & Mortar, Dangerously Delicious Pies) supplied the crowd with pie. They are a little bit different than the songs you would hear off the full length but still very solid. Enjoy!

Now Streaming: RVIVR’s “Bicker and Breathe EP”

Olympia, WA has spit out lots of great bands. There’s something about that upper hemisphere on the coast—maybe the air, the water but hell its something I want in every state. Throughout time we have seen, like DC the growth of the Riot grrrl movement spitting out killer lady acts like Sleater-Kinney, The Blow, and Bikini Kill.

Keeping with that movement is a band that I’ve seen grow tremendously in the last couple of years. A band that uses it’s own talent to promote itself, barely utilizing the internet. RVIVR (pronounced Reviver) has put out give or take 5 albums (counting EPs and 7″) since their inception in the 2000’s. Their 2013 full length The Beauty Between has received top acclaim from notable sites as Punknews.org and Absolute Punk.

A rare skill is the ability to put out records that keep to the same flow and motivation, while still putting out something fresh. Their newest EP entitled Bicker and Breathe is no exception. The record kicks off with notable quotes like ” FORGET LUCK / WHEN EVERYTHING YOU LOVE HAS COME UNDONE” and “WE DON’T WANNA GET GOOD AT GOODBYES”–notable lines that tear into the listener’s heart.

The full stream is below. Bicker and Breathe EP is available on Rumbletowne Records.

Now Streaming: Terry Malts’ Insides EP

Last week we shared with you an incredible group called Terry Malts. Riding the similar wave as other quasi-shoegaze pop punk/garage (a la PUP, Wavves, Fidlar, and Joanna Gruesome), TM shows us just how this genre or subset is here to stay. In only a few tracks out of their new EP entitled, Insides EP the trio blasts out tracks about generally not fitting in with the crowd, anger as well as other topic. One of our favorite tracks Grumpy Old Men offers an almost bizarre less raucous sound. All of the tracks keep to an almost skipping beat that makes one want to hop to it. And you should…hop straight to that record store and spend your laundry money on this EP (out Sept 23rd).

Now Streaming: Hostage Calm “Die on Stage”

Later this month CT Hardcore/Post-hardcore band, Hostage Calm was expected to release their 3rd full length album Die on Stage. Judging only off of the news that we have seen via facebook and other media outlets this was to be a highly anticipated album. Well much to the band’s chagrin, fans no longer have to wait.

So you’ve never researched Trans-rock?

Let’s preface this article by stating I am not classifying Tran-Rock as a genre or really a classification by any means. Really what I’m doing is putting together a group of really talented musicians that have opened their hearts and minds during tough moments of their lives; sharing that with the world.

In only a short few weeks I will be seeing Laura Jane Grace of punk group Against Me! for the 2nd time ever. First time of which was seeing her on stage at DC’s Rock and Roll Hotel in Northeast [shameless plug of my photos].

Recently I fell on a killer interview led by George Stroumboulopoulos of CBC. In the interview Grace discusses her new record Transgender Dysphoria Blues, her life and loves, and the artists that influenced her even when she wasn’t in transition.

If you are even considering a killer show, led by an artist that voices the struggles one can go through (whether you relate or not)—NO QUESTIONS ASKED!–Head to 9:30 Club 9/10 or 9/11. Tickets are currently sold out, but you never know something could open up.

Throughout music’s history we have seen and heard artists who are influenced or motivated by their own gender dysphoria. I have outlined a playlist for those curious below.

It took Pains of Being Pure at Heart 3 years to come out with their follow up record, Day of Abandon. This record truly follows up the 2011 release Belong if not blows it out of the water. With some great singles and filler songs that prove to be some of the most stellar, this is sure to be on the rise in the next year. Oh yeah, and you can listen to the whole thing below. ENJOY!
